Nairobi – Mount Kenya National Park

Prepare for the early mornings of your Kenyan trekking safari by rising early and being ready for pick-up by your driver. Departing from Kenya's capital, you'll journey northward through Kenya's captivating countryside. As you traverse a section of the Great African Rift Valley, you'll catch glimpses of daily life and the surrounding vistas.

Upon entering Mount Kenya National Park, the drive will carry you to an altitude of 2,000 meters above sea level. This elevation marks the beginning of your acclimatization to the changing climate and altitude. To expedite the adaptation process, a guided walk through the neighboring forests awaits. Here, you'll learn about the local plants' medicinal qualities and spot the various birds and mammals inhabiting the mountainside.

Before nightfall, an opportunity arises to visit the renowned Mau-Mau caves, famed both for their historical significance in battles and their geological allure. Following this full day of driving and exploration, a camp dinner awaits, as you retire to mountain lodges for the night.

Full Day Trekking Mount Kenya

Mountain mornings commence early, as you wake up to a hearty cooked breakfast and a comforting hot beverage. Your day kicks off with a drive towards Mount Kenya, guiding you across the equator and leading you to the Sirimon Gate of the national park. Here begins your authentic safari trekking adventure.

Ascending the trail, you'll traverse through a vegetation zone that echoes cooler climates, a contrast to the African landscape you might anticipate. The mountain forests and bamboo groves at this elevation offer a refreshing atmosphere, allowing you to experience a distinct facet of the continent. Moorlands also grace the terrain, yet you can be assured that you are still within Kenya's embrace.

Following a 2-3 hour trek, you'll have ascended approximately 740 meters. Your day concludes at the Old Moses hut, where your porters will have preparations underway for dinner and beverages upon your arrival.

Full Day Trekking Mount Kenya

Experience the serene early hours on the mountain, a time of calmness enveloped by cool breezes over the expansive landscape. Amidst this tranquility, you'll indulge in a nourishing breakfast, energizing you for the day's forthcoming trekking.

As you ascend, you'll traverse the moorlands at this elevation and reach the Likii Valley. This rugged terrain, shaped over eons by glaciers, unveils captivating vistas and provides moments of contemplation as you make your way up Mount Kenya. Your knowledgeable African safari trek guide will identify the diverse animal and plant life present here, including specialized flora such as ostrich plum lobelia and cabbage groundsel.

Likii hut will serve as your camp for the evening, reachable within three to four hours from your departure point at Moses hut, where you'll also have lunch. The afternoon offers an optional hike to the 4,714-meter high Terere peak, affording you the chance to acclimate to the higher altitudes you'll soon encounter.

Full Day Trekking Mount Kenya

This day unveils a trek through the Mackinder Valley, following a satisfying breakfast. The landscape is almost extraterrestrial, featuring peculiar plant life interspersed amidst grasslands reminiscent of northern Europe.

Unlike the wildlife found on the Kenyan plains far below, the animal realm here is unique. Keep an eye out for the curious rock hyrax, a small creature intriguingly related to elephants, often darting around and seeking shelter beneath rocks at these altitudes. Sunbirds, vibrant flashes of color in the rocky terrain, also inhabit this elevation on the mountain.

Your overnight stay will be at Shipton camp, situated at an altitude of 4,236 meters. Your perspective will encompass the towering peaks crowning Mount Kenya, shaped over millions of years through volcanic activity. The retreating glaciers, simultaneously captivating and poignant, are also within your gaze.

Full Day Trekking Mount Kenya

Prepare for a challenging and action-packed day, setting the stage for your imminent final ascent. Kickstart your day with a hearty breakfast designed to fuel you for the day's trials. Your journey kicks off with the climb to Hausberg col, ascending to 4,700 meters above sea level, followed by a steep descent to Hasberg valley and Oblong tarns.

Without pause, you proceed to your next ascent, navigating colossal boulders to reach the pinnacle of Two Tarn. Remarkably, all of this unfolds before lunch. Post a well-earned meal, you resume your path, descending into the lush greenery of Teleki valley. Yet, your day's trekking doesn't conclude here; the journey continues to the Naromoru summit trail, involving a steep ascent leading you to your night's accommodation at Austrian Camp.

Amidst this extended day of trekking, you'll navigate demanding yet manageable terrain, elevating you to 4,780 meters. Known as the summit circuit, this route primes you for the impending final ascent to Lenana Peak, slated for tomorrow.

Full Day Trekking Mount Kenya

In anticipation of witnessing the mesmerizing sunrise from the pinnacle of Africa, set out early to begin your ascent. Lenana Peak, towering at an altitude of 4,895 meters, beckons you to traverse frozen terrain and navigate a scramble adjacent to the Lewis glacier. Pre-dawn, the mountain lies cloaked in darkness, demanding careful navigation and a dependable headlamp to ensure your safety.

After a trek lasting one to two hours, you'll reach your coveted destination. With a stroke of luck, you might catch a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. The panoramic view encompasses Kenya's vast plains, alongside the mountain's glaciers and the rugged rocks that define its peak. Reaching Mount Kenya's Lenana Peak marks a remarkable accomplishment for every devoted climber.

Once you've savored the breathtaking panorama, your descent over two to three hours will lead you to Mackinder's camp. Here, a breakfast worthy of your morning's triumph awaits. The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy; either allow your tired legs to rest or embark on leisurely hikes to explore the region's diverse plant and animal life.

Mount Kenya National Park - Nairobi

As the adage goes, what ascends must ultimately descend, and your last morning is dedicated to a brisk descent down Mount Kenya following a satisfying breakfast. The journey to the Naromoru Gate of the national park spans approximately five hours, guiding you to an altitude of 2,600 meters.

Upon reaching a more manageable elevation, your driver will convey you to Mountain Rock Lodge within the national park. There, a well-deserved lunch awaits, affording you a brief interlude of relaxation. From the lodge, your journey continues as you're chauffeured back to Nairobi. Depending on your destination, whether it's your hotel, residence, or the international airport, your driver will accommodate your preference.

Concluding your trekking safari in Kenya, this final day encompasses:

  • No overnight accommodation, as this marks the end of your journey
